Non-NHS Services and Fees

Non-NHS Services and Fees

Our GP contract with the NHS covers medical care and treatment provided to NHS patients. However, GPs are often asked to complete additional, non-medical tasks for other organisations or individuals. These requests fall outside of NHS-funded work and may therefore incur a private fee.

Please note that GPs are not required to undertake non-NHS work, except in specific cases such as confirming that a patient is unable to attend jury service. While we aim to assist where possible, such services are not part of routine NHS care and may involve a separate fee.

If you need a form or report completed, please do NOT book a standard appointment. Please submit a request BELOW, once your request has been submitted, you will be contacted to arrange an out-of-hours appointment with Dr Raj, if appropriate.

Samples

Pathology Samples

If your doctor or other clinician has asked you to provide a pathology sample (e.g. urine, stool, or sputum), please drop it off at reception before 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday.

To ensure patient safety and accurate processing:

  • Do NOT post samples or leave them in the letterbox, as this can lead to contamination or loss. There is a dedicated sample drop-off area at reception, with clear labeling.

  • Please complete a sample tracking ticket when handing in your sample, this is stationed right above the sample drop of box.  This helps us trace results and avoid any delays if a sample goes missing.

⚠️ Important:
All samples must be clearly labelled with the sticker label provided by your GP or clinician during your appointment. Unlabeled samples will NOT be processed and will be rejected by the laboratory.

Sick (Fit) Notes

Sickness for Seven Days or Less

If you’re off sick for seven days or less, your employer should not ask for medical evidence that you’ve been ill. Instead, they can ask you to confirm that you’ve been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. We call this self-certification.

Find out more about sick notes on the NHS website.

Sickness of More than Seven Days

If you are sick and off work for more than seven days, your employer will normally ask you to provide a medical certificate from your GP. When you need a certificate will also depend on your employer’s company policy on sick leave (or sickness absence). This policy should tell you how many days you can be off sick before you need a note.

To find out about your employer’s policy :

  • Ask your team leader or supervisor, or
  • Speak to someone from your human resources (HR) or personal department

When your Medical Certificate Runs Out

If your certificate runs out but you are still sick, you will need to consult the doctor again before you can get a further sick note. Renewal of an existing medical certificates cannot be completed until the current certificate runs out.

Medical certificates can be back-dated so it is not necessary to make an emergency appointment to renew your certificate. If you attend an emergency appointment for the purpose of getting a medical certificate, you will be asked to re-book.

FIT notes for Children

Please note that St Martins Medical Centre does not provide examinations and sickness certificates for school children.

Please see the guidance below from the British Medical Association:

    • It should be noted that GPs do not provide sick notes for school children
    • When children are absent from school owning to illness, schools may request a letter from a parent or guardian, and this is no different during an exam period
    • However, children who have missed exams due to illness are frequently told by schools that a note from a doctor is required; but this cannot be provided by a GP
    • Aside from the fact that parents/guardians are responsible for excusing their children from school, GPs cannot provide retrospective sickness certification
    • When a child suffers from a long-term condition, any certification will be provided by the responsible specialist
    • GPC has sought and received confirmation from the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator that Awarding Organisations make no requirement for pupils to obtain a medical certificate in support of their application, but this may take the form of a statement by the school
    • The Joint Council for Qualifications has confirmed that as far as they are concerned, if a student was absent from an examination as a result of illness and has the support of the school or center to be absent, special consideration will be granted on that basis
    • Awarding Organisation do not insist that medical proof is provided

Virtual Group Consultations (VGCs) – Education and Support for Long-Term Conditions

VGCs

We will be introducing Virtual Group Consultations (VGCs) as a proactive way to educate and support patients with long-term conditions and promote prevention.

These sessions may cover topics such as:

  • Asthma inhaler techniques

  • Diabetes management

  • Non-diabetic hyperglycaemia (NDH)

  • And more

VGCs are run in two parts:

  • Part 1: Education – patients receive information about the condition. Questions can be submitted via text on the Zoom/Teams portal.

  • Part 2: Q&A – we answer the submitted questions and provide guidance.

Benefits of VGCs:

  • Encourage patients to connect with others facing similar health challenges

  • Provide education and practical advice

  • Support prevention and better management of conditions, reducing the risk of complications

These sessions may be led by our GPs, Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs), and HCAs, ensuring expert guidance and support in a convenient online format.

We will be sending out messages to capture your preferences for when you would like to join the sessions and will plan the sessions accordingly, sharing further information once details are finalised.

We believe VGCs are a great way to learn, share, and take control of your health from the comfort of your home.

Well baby and Immunisations

Well baby and Immunisations

At our practice, we are dedicated to supporting the health and development of your baby from birth. Regular check-ups and immunisations are key to ensuring your child grows strong and healthy.

Developmental Checks

Our doctors are available to conduct regular developmental checks for your baby. These appointments are a vital part of monitoring your baby’s growth and development. The doctors will assess various milestones and provide guidance on nutrition, sleep, and overall well-being. If you have any concerns about your baby’s development, please feel free to discuss them during these visits.

Immunisations

Immunisations are an essential part of keeping your baby protected from serious diseases. Our practice nurse administers all vaccinations by appointment. We strongly encourage all parents to ensure their baby receives their immunisations on time.

While illnesses like diphtheria, tetanus, and polio have become rare due to widespread vaccination, they can still be dangerous and even fatal if contracted. Immunisations protect your baby from these potentially life-threatening diseases. Therefore, it is crucial that you keep your vaccination appointments and avoid cancelling where possible.

Why Immunisations are Important

Vaccination is a safe and effective way to protect your child from serious illnesses. By ensuring your baby receives all recommended immunisations, you are not only protecting their health but also contributing to the wider community’s immunity. This helps prevent outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases.

If you have any questions or concerns about your baby’s vaccinations, please don’t hesitate to speak to our practice nurse or your doctor.

We are here to guide and support you through the process.

How It Works

If you have been selected, you will be assigned to one of our two dedicated care teams: Team Blue or Team Orange. This approach enables us to build stronger, long-term relationships with you and provide more personalised, responsive healthcare.

This is in addition to any routine appointments you may book through RapidHealth.

Based on your clinical needs, you will also be given a status: Green, Amber, or Red.

  • Green: You will be invited for a proactive health assessment every 3 months, but only if clinically necessary.

  • Amber: You will be invited for a proactive health assessment every 2 months.

  • Red: You will be invited for a proactive health assessment monthly.

This model ensures that your care is tailored and timely, based on your individual health needs.

FeNo Screening

FeNo Screening

Why we’re recommending the test:

It’s called a FeNO test — it only takes a few minutes and involves gently blowing into a small device. That’s it! It’s completely safe, non-invasive, and child-friendly — no needles or discomfort at all.

Benefits explained in parent-friendly terms:

We recommend it because, this quick, non-invasive test is a proactive teat which gives us really valuable information about any inflammation in your child’s lungs. If your child has asthma or has had any recent coughing, wheezing, or breathing issues, this test can help us personalise their care — whether that’s adjusting treatment or confirming if inflammation is playing a part.

Reassurance:

We know asthma and breathing issues can be unpredictable, and this test is one of the best tools available to ensure your child is getting exactly the support they need.

Encouragement to book:

You will receive a call from the practice in due course. We encourage you to take up an appointment to proactively control, manage and treat your condition.

Latent Tuberculosis Screening

Latent TB Screening

What is Latent TB?

  • Latent Tuberculosis (TB) is a state in which a person has been infected with the TB bacteria, but the infection is dormant and not actively causing disease. People with latent TB are not contagious but may develop active TB later if their immune system weakens.

Who Should Be Screened for Latent TB?

Screening for latent TB is recommended for individuals at increased risk, including:

  • People with a history of close contact with someone with active TB
  • Individuals born in or who have traveled to countries with high TB prevalence
  • Immunocompromised individuals (e.g., HIV-positive, organ transplant recipients)
  • People who have worked or lived in high-risk environments (e.g., healthcare settings, correctional facilities)

Screening Methods:

  1. Interferon-Gamma Release Assays (IGRAs) – Blood tests that measure the immune response to TB bacteria. These are often preferred for people who have received the BCG vaccine.

Non-NHS Services – Chargeable Services Beyond NHS Care

Non-NHS - Chargeable Work

The National Health Service (NHS) provides essential healthcare services free of charge; however, certain services fall outside the scope of NHS funding. General Practitioners (GPs) operate as self-employed professionals under contract to deliver NHS general medical services, but they are entitled to charge reasonable fees for additional private services.

Chargeable Private Medical Services

Our medical professionals provide a range of non-NHS services, which include but are not limited to:

  • Insurance medical examinations (e.g., life or health insurance assessments)
  • Driving medical assessments (e.g., HGV, PSV, taxi licenses)
  • Private prescriptions for medication taken abroad
  • Private sick notes
  • Vaccination certificates
  • Travel fitness certificates
  • “To Whom It May Concern” letters
  • Holiday cancellation claim forms
  • Private referrals for specialist care

These services are subject to processing times of up to two weeks, unless urgent. Please contact our admin executive Guste for a detailed fee schedule and appointment availability.

Sedatives for Flying

Sedatives for Flying and Fit to Fly

We appreciate that the fear of flying is genuine and very frightening. In the past, doctors sometimes prescribed sedatives to help, but these medications can potentially make you agitated or aggressive and significantly delay reaction time.

These are therefore no longer advised in line with the doctor’s prescribing guidelines. A lower-risk approach is to tackle this properly and hopefully permanently, with a Fear of Flying course run by the airlines; I have listed a number of these below and there are also some free online courses:

The clinicians at St Martin’s Medical Centre no longer prescribe sedatives for flight anxiety.

Fit to Fly Assessments

We are unable to issue letters or certificates stating patients are “fit to fly”. Assessing whether someone is fit to fly falls outside our expertise as General Practitioners GPs.
We can provide factual information about medical conditions and pregnancy if required by your airline. Please check with your airline which specific information or need completing. Please note we charge a fee for this.
For some conditions your hospital team will be better placed to provide information. Pregnant women may be able to obtain the required paperwork from their obstetrics / midwife team.

Chronic Disease Management

Chronic Disease Management

We provide ongoing care for a range of long-term conditions, including:
Diabetes, Asthma, Coronary Heart Disease, Hypertension, TIA/Stroke, COPD, Epilepsy, Mental Health conditions, Cancer, and Obesity.

Early detection and proper management of these conditions can help reduce the risk of complications and improve overall health and wellbeing.

We run regular clinics for long term conditions and proactively contact patients when it’s time for their annual review.

If you are due for a review, you can also book an appointment with a Practice Nurse or our Health Care Assistants.

NHS e-Referral Service

e-Referral service

The NHS e-Referral Service (e-RS) combines electronic booking with a choice of place, date and time for first hospital or clinic appointments. Patients can choose their initial hospital or clinic appointment, book it in the GP surgery at the point of referral, or later at home on the phone or online.

Please note the Surgery does not receive any update on your referral status, unless, it has been declined or further information has been requested. We recommend contacting the hospital directly via the provided contact details when you were first referred or contacting the hospital appointments line.

Using the Service

If you’re a patient, find out more about appointment booking on the NHS.UK website.

Whether you’re using e-RS for the first time, or an existing user wanting to make the most of the service, NHS Digital provides a range of material for referrers (such as a general practice), providers (a hospital or clinic) and commissioners.

Family planning, Well woman checks, Smears and HRT

We also offer cervical smears, pre-conception advice, and hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

Many serious diseases can be prevented by changing to a healthier lifestyle.

  • Reduce pain and swelling in affected joints

Post-Natal

Post-natal

8-Week Postnatal Check for Mother and Baby

It’s important for both you and your baby to attend your postnatal check when your baby is around 8 weeks old.

During this appointment:

  • Your baby will have a full health check to ensure they are developing well.

  • You will also have a check-up to discuss your recovery, physical health, and emotional wellbeing after birth.

We schedule this appointment at 8 weeks so that your baby can receive their first set of vaccinations at the same time. This helps save you an extra trip to the surgery and ensures your baby’s immunisations are given on time.

Please contact the surgery at least 2 weeks before your baby reaches 8 weeks old to arrange your postnatal check and vaccinations.
